Customer Showcase: Chris Chaney

Creating an acoustic solution for a prolific rock star.

Chris Chaney's home studio in Palm Springs.

Chris Chaney has been a mainstay of the rock community for 30 years. From his early days in the touring band for Alanis Morrissette to his stint as bass player for Jane's Addiction to his current gig as touring bassist for hard rock legends AC/DC, Chris has developed a reputation for versatility and excellence.

It's also why he's one of the most in-demand musicians working today, with credits on albums by such varied artists as Slash, Meat Loaf, Celine Dion, Joe Satriani, Sara Bareilles, Rob Zombie, and Glen Campbell.

Chris Chaney and Audimute first connected in 2022 via Guns N' Roses drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Matt Sorum; Audimute had done the acoustic treatment for Matt's GoodNoise Studios; Chris, impressed with the results, contacted Audimute when he was ready to begin work on his home studio in Palm Springs.

While the large windows in the room afforded beautiful views of the surrounding desert foothills, they were also highly reflective for sound. The smaller size of the room also meant sound waves had less distance to travel before bouncing off a surface.

Audimute worked closely with Chris and our friends at Audio-Technica to design the studio, and in November 2022, after two months of planning and prep work, Audimute traveled to Palm Springs to install several acoustic solutions.

On the front wall behind the drum kit and on one side wall behind the guitar rack: Audimute Strata Sticks®. Made of our signature sound-absorbing material eco-C-tex®, Strata absorbs 95% of echoes and reverb and can be coated in any color from Sherwin-Williams or other leading commercial brands.

Along the back wall: AcoustiWood®. Designed to resemble real wood, our AcoustiWood planks absorb an average of 70% of echoes, reverberations, and mid to high frequencies. A layer of black Fabric Acoustic Panels runs through the middle of the wall, as well.

On another side wall: two Custom Image Acoustic Panels, each featuring high-quality graphics printed on acoustical fabric.

And, finally, on the ceiling: more Audimute Strata, this time in our Cityscape style to add a compelling visual texture to the space.

The outcome: a studio with a design inspired by the mid-century modern style of Palm Springs and an acoustic treatment ready for rehearsal, performance, and recording.

Chris was so pleased with his Audimute studio that he brought us back a year later to work on his home studio in Los Angeles: "The Bassmint". Check out a tour of the L.A. studio here (and see if you can spot the Audimute solutions throughout).

Audimute thanks Chris for his continued friendship, his support of our company and its mission, and his amazing musicianship. Be sure to catch him on Instagram and live with AC/DC (or any of the other acts lucky enough to have him).
