Audimute Treatment of Silas Hite's Studio

Emmy-winning composer Silas Hite has scored music for film, TV, video games, and commercials, and when he relocated from California to his home state of Ohio a couple years ago, it was crucial that he could have an acoustically treated space to continue that work. "I need to be able to record, mix, and deliver at the highest-quality level audio possible," he says. "This means having great-sounding rooms."

As Silas began work on his new studio, he soon ran into a sound problem that his initial acoustic treatment wasn't solving. "I was still getting some high frequency flutter in my tracking room," Silas says. "I was fairly certain it was coming from the sound waves bouncing off of the untreated parts of the walls."

Enter Audimute. Silas turned to us for lightweight, sound-absorbing solutions that could treat the flutter echo while also fitting in with the design of his studio. Our Fabric Acoustic Panels wrapped in textiles of Silas's choosing were fastened to various reflective surfaces around the tracking room, while six additional 4' x 4' panels were added to the ceiling of his control room to address additional acoustic issues.

Silas also worked with Audimute to install sound-absorbing material in the space within the double-paned window separating his studio's tracking and control rooms. "The window is handmade and the woodwork is beautiful, so I wanted the [look of the] sound treatment inside the window to complement it," Silas says. "With Audimute, I was able to customize the fabric to my taste."

The outcome is a studio that sounds incredible while also staying true to Silas's aesthetic vision. Thank you, Silas, for letting Audimute be a part of your success story.

Customer Showcase: Khirye Tyler

The home studio of Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter Khirye Tyler

We're proud to unveil the new Audimute studio of Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Khirye Tyler!

Best known for his work with such superstars as Beyoncé, Meek Mill, and Roddy Ricch, Khirye was put in touch with Audimute when he needed a sound-absorbing solution for his new home studio. After several phone calls and consultations, we created an acoustic treatment using AcoustiColor® acoustic panels in a geometric design, Fabric Acoustic Panels on the side walls of the space, and custom-made bass traps for the corners.

The outcome was an acoustically treated space that allows Khirye to use his studio the way it was intended to be used, with crisp, clear sound quality free of excessive echo and reverb.

Check out the video below for a look at Khirye Tyler's Audimute studio!

To Treat or Not to Treat?

Gabriel Staznik's drum room from Audimute.

At Audimute, we've been lucky to work with some of the top drummers in the music industry, and we've been even luckier that those drummers have shared the results of their Audimute acoustic solutions with their legions of followers on social media platforms like Instagram.

Recently, one of our drummer friends, Gabriel Staznik, showed his 90,000+ followers "Before Audimute" and "After Audimute" footage of him drumming in his drum room. In the "Before" footage, the boom of the floor tom bounced around the space while the crack of the snare was nearly lost in the reverberations from the rest of the drum kit.

The "After" footage, on the other hand, revealed an acoustically treated room courtesy of such Audimute solutions as our Planks Acoustic Panels Kit and AcoustiColor® Planks and Panels. In this footage, the sound was crisper. The drums were cleaner. It was a significant acoustic difference, and Gabriel was excited it to share with his followers.

Among the several comments on the post were a couple different ones that mentioned they liked the sound of the untreated room — the "before" — better.

And you know what? They weren't wrong.

'Wait a minute! How can you say that?' you might ask. "You're an acoustic solutions company, and you treated his drum room! Shouldn't those comments about liking the untreated sound make you upset?"

No.

Just like those commenters, we might ultimately prefer the "raw, untreated" sound of booming, echo-y drums, BUT we want it to be an intentional choice by the musician. In an untreated room, there's no choice: you're always going to get echo.

With an Audimute treatment, Gabriel is in control of the sound in his drum studio instead of the other way around. He now enjoys a crisp, clear sound in the room; if he wants to add reverb or effects after the fact, he can, as opposed to the more difficult task of cutting out the reverb post-recording if he doesn't want it.

There's nothing wrong with echo and reverb on a recording, of course. Many legendary artists, from the Beach Boys to Frank Sinatra to the Supremes to the Beatles, recorded vocals or instruments in specific rooms or studios with lots of echo to capture that special reverb-y sound. It all depends on the outcome you're going for.

Gabriel said it best in the comments on his post: "If you want raw, lively energy for a big, open drum sound, untreated rooms can be magic. [...] But if you need clarity, control, and mix-ready recordings, treatment makes all the difference."

Carter is the drummer for the Lion King on Broadway. He had been using Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets in his home studio for years with great success. The Sound Absorption Sheets met his needs as they effectively improved the sound in his studio, were affordable, and worked well as a background for video production.

When the opportunity arose to transform his garage into a new studio, Carter called Audimute to expand on his success with Sound Absorption Sheets and create a unique sound solution. We worked together to design, manufacture, and install Audimute solutions culminating in a one-of-a-kind studio that looks and sounds amazing.
